EXAMINATION TIPS

How to get ready for examination?

I want to share a few tips on this topic.

1. Do revision early.
2. Write note or colour the important sentence as the main points.
3. Read again, practice makes perfect.
4. Get enough sleep and rest so our mind will be ready for next revision.

GUIDELINE FOR ENGLISH LANGUAGE PAPER 2

Here some guideline to help our pupils to improve in their English Language Examination Paper especially in Paper 2.


SECTION A
SENTENCE CONSTRUCTION


General tips
  • A picture with ten words is given to the pupils.
  • The pupils are required to write five sentences based on the picture and the words given.
  • The pupils are advised to answer the question in 15 minutes.
  • 10 marks for this section


The picture
  • Study the picture carefully.
  • Note the scene, the activity and the people.
  • Using the ‘Wh’ questions to expand your sentences regarding the picture.


The words
  • Read the words given, use them to know the tenses and to make the sentences.


The answers
  • Write sentences about what you see in the picture.
  • Use the subject, verb and object formula to make sentences.
  • Use a variety of sentences: simple, compound and complex sentences.
  • Check for spelling, grammar and punctuation to avoid errors.
  • Write the sentences clearly.



SECTION B
INFORMATION TRANSFER


General tips
  • A text consisting of three pictures with short notes is given to the pupils.
  • The pupils are required to answer the questions in 25 minutes.
  • 10 marks for question (a) and 5 marks for question (b).


The stimuli
  • The stimuli usually consists of three pictures and with short notes.
  • Study the notes carefully before answering the questions.


Question (a)
  • Transfer some correct information from the text to complete the table.
  • Study the text carefully.
  • Fill in the blanks according to the topic by topic.
  • Spell correctly and  do not make mistake in spelling and punctuation.


Question (b)
  • Make only one choice and give five reasons for making the choice.
  • Give good and relevant reasons in a well-organised manner.
  • Write a variety of sentences and use simple present tense.
  • Check for spelling, grammar and punctuation to avoid errors.
  • Write the sentences clearly.

  

SECTION C
NOTE EXPANSION


General tips
  • It tests on the pupils writing skills.
  • The pupils are required to answer the questions in 35 minutes.
  • 15 marks for this question.


The pictures and notes
  • Study the visual stimuli given carefully.
  • Usually  three pictures series are given.
  • Read, understand the short notes given for each picture.
  • Decide the tense to use by looking at the verbs given.
  • Do not change the tense and the order of the short notes given.


The answer
  • Expand the notes based on the visual stimuli.
  • Make sure use a variety of sentence structures.
  • Add in some ideas to make the answer interesting.
  • Use good and appropriate vocabulary, expressions, proverb or idioms and also always maintain a good flow between paragraphs
  • Check for spelling, grammar and punctuation to avoid errors.
  • Write the sentences clearly.

ELEMENTS TO BUILD A SENTENCE

BUILDING SENTENCES

THE ELEMENTS TO MAKE A SENTENCE IS TO KNOW THE USAGE OF GRAMMAR.


A. NOUNS
A noun is used to name a person, an animal, a thing or a place.

Example :
1. Farisha is a hardworking pupil.
2. They are going to visit Pasir Salak next week and buy some souveniars.
3. The rabbit and the turtle eat vegetables.

B. ARTICLES
The articles a and an are used to refer singular nouns.
Articles a is used before a singular noun that begin with a consonant sound. Articles an is used before a singular noun that begin with a vowel sound.

Example :
1. This is a bag
2. Liza is buying an umbrella.

The articles the is used to refer to:
1. A particular person or thing.
2. In front of objects which are the only one of their type.
3. When a word is mentioned the second time.
4. With superlative adjectives

Articles the can be used for singular and plural nouns.

Example :
1. The man over there is my uncle.
2. The moon shines at night.
3. I bought a pencil. The pencil is for my brother.
4. Iskandar is the tallest boy in class.

C. PRONOUNS
A pronoun is used to replace a noun.

Example:
Muhammad Ariz is my friend. He lives in Sungai Besar.

Personal Pronouns can be the subject or the object in a sentence.
A. If a pronoun is used as a subject, use it before a noun.
B. If a pronoun is used as an object, use it after a verb or a preposition.

Subject
He, She, It, I, You, They, We

Object
Him, Her, It, Me, You, Them, Us

D. ADJECTIVES
An adjective is used to describe a noun. They describe more about the shapes, sizes and colours of nouns.

Example :
1. Mr Richard drives a red car.
2. Zulkarnain is a tall man.

E. ADVERBS
An adverb is used to modify a verb, an adjective or another adverb.
Adverbs divided into three.

A. Adverbs of Manner
They are used to describe how something is done.
Example: My grandmother walks slowly.

B. Adverbs of Time
They are used to tell when an action happened.
Example : The bus will arrive soon.

C. Adverbs of Frequency
They describe how often a certain action is done.
Example : She is always absent from school.

F. VERBS
A verb is used to show an action.

Example:
1. The tiger roars loudly in its cage.
2. Abu and Ahmad go to the school together.
3. My father and I went to the beach during the holiday.
4. She buys three loaves of bread from the supermarket.


G. PREPOSITIONS
Prepositions are words used before nouns or pronouns to show location or direction.

1. Prepositions of location show place and position.
Examples:
in, on, under, next to, behind, between, among and against.

2. Prepositions of directions show direction of things.
Examples :
through, over, across, along and to

H. CONJUNCTIONS
Conjunctions are words used to join words, phrases, or clauses in a sentence.

Examples : and, or, but, because and so

1. And is used to combine things of similar value or function.
2. Or is used to show choices.
3. But is used to show contrast
4. Because is used to show reason.
5. So is used to show the result of something.
